About SubtitleTools
SubtitleTools started from a small, specific frustration: needing to convert a subtitle file between formats, and finding that most of the tools online made it harder than it should be — forced account creation, upload limits hidden behind a paywall, or interfaces so cluttered with ads that the actual tool was hard to find.
The idea here is deliberately narrow: build tools that do one conversion well, let people use them immediately, and get out of the way. No sign-up screen between you and your file. No “create an account to download your result.” Just the tool.
Why subtitles, specifically
Subtitle files are a genuinely common pain point — for video editors juggling formats between clients and software, for translators who just want the dialogue without timestamps in the way, for the anime fansubbing community working with styled ASS files, and for anyone trying to turn auto-generated captions into something readable. It's a small, specific problem, which makes it a good one to solve properly rather than half-heartedly alongside a hundred unrelated tools.
How the tools actually work
Every conversion here is built on a shared internal engine: whatever format you upload gets parsed into one common structure, and that structure gets exported into whatever format you asked for. That's also why, whenever it's technically possible, the conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript — your file is never uploaded to a server to do the actual work. It's not a privacy policy promise; it's how the tool is built.
How this site is funded
SubtitleTools is free to use and supported by advertising, not by selling your data or gating features behind a subscription. That's a deliberate trade-off: ads pay the (very small) hosting cost, and in exchange every tool stays free and fully usable without an account.
What's next
The subtitle tools are the starting point, not the whole plan. The same approach — a shared conversion engine, no account required, processing done locally whenever possible — is built to extend to other everyday file problems over time, each one solved with the same amount of care as the first.
