What is an ASS file?
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is a subtitle format popular in fansubbing and anime communities because it supports rich styling, positioning and animation. That power comes at a cost: most video players, editors and platforms only accept the simpler SRT format, so ASS files often need converting before they can be used elsewhere. Under the hood, an ASS file has three sections — [Script Info], [V4+ Styles] and [Events] — where the Events section holds the actual Dialogue lines this converter reads, each one referencing a named style defined earlier in the file.
How to convert ASS to SRT
- 1Upload your .ass or .ssa file by dragging it in or clicking "Choose file".
- 2The tool reads the [Events] section and converts each Dialogue line.
- 3Timestamps are converted from ASS's centisecond format to SRT's millisecond format.
- 4Preview the result, then copy it or download the .srt file.
Why use our ASS to SRT converter?
- Make anime or fansub subtitles compatible with players that only support SRT.
- Upload subtitles to platforms that require the SRT format.
- Simplify heavily-styled subtitles down to plain, portable text.
- Edit dialogue in a standard subtitle editor that doesn't support ASS.
- Archive subtitles in a more universally-readable format.

FAQ
- How are ASS timestamps converted to SRT?
- ASS uses "H:MM:SS.cc" (centiseconds), while SRT uses "HH:MM:SS,mmm" (milliseconds). For example, 0:00:01.00 becomes 00:00:01,000. The conversion is done precisely, down to the millisecond.
- What happens to ASS styling like colors, positioning or fonts?
- Visual styling override tags (things like {\an8} or {\i1}) aren't supported by SRT, so they're removed. The underlying dialogue text is preserved.
- Does it support both .ass and .ssa files?
- Yes, both Advanced SubStation Alpha (.ass) and SubStation Alpha (.ssa) files are accepted.
- Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?
- No, parsing and conversion both happen locally in your browser.
- What if my ASS file uses a slightly different Format line order?
- That's handled automatically. The converter reads the actual Format: line in your file to figure out which column is Start, End and Text, rather than assuming a fixed column order, so it still works correctly even if a style or tool wrote the columns differently.
