What is a VTT file?
WebVTT is common on the web, but many desktop players, mobile apps and subtitle editors still expect the older, simpler SRT format. Converting from VTT to SRT maximizes compatibility. This matters most when captions come from a web source — an auto-captioned video, a course platform, a downloaded YouTube track — but the final destination is a media player, phone or editor built around the SRT convention instead.
How to convert VTT to SRT
- 1Upload your .vtt file by dragging it in or clicking "Choose file".
- 2The tool strips the WEBVTT header and metadata, and adds sequence numbers.
- 3Timestamps are reformatted to SRT's comma-separated style.
- 4Preview the result, then copy it or download the .srt file.
Why use our VTT to SRT converter?
- Play captions in desktop or mobile video players that expect SRT.
- Edit subtitles in an editor that only supports the SRT format.
- Upload subtitles to a platform that doesn't accept WebVTT.
- Standardize a mixed subtitle library on the more universal SRT format.
Privacy
Your VTT file is parsed and converted locally in your browser using JavaScript — it is never uploaded to a server to perform this conversion. Nothing you convert here is stored, logged, or seen by anyone else.
FAQ
- Does the converter add subtitle numbers?
- Yes, since WebVTT cue identifiers are optional, sequential numbers are generated automatically in the SRT output.
- Are NOTE and STYLE blocks converted too?
- No, those are WebVTT-only metadata blocks with no SRT equivalent, so they're safely excluded from the output.
- Will formatting tags be kept?
- Basic tags like <i>, <b> and <u> are preserved in the dialogue text since SRT supports them too.
- Is my file kept private?
- Yes, the conversion runs entirely in your browser and the file is never sent to a server.
- What happens to WebVTT cues with positioning settings?
- Positioning and alignment settings on a VTT cue line (like "line:90% align:start") aren't part of SRT, so they're dropped during conversion — the timing and dialogue text are preserved exactly, just without that web-specific positioning.
