What is a VTT file?

WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks) is the subtitle and caption format used natively by HTML5 video with the <track> element. It starts with a WEBVTT header and can include NOTE, STYLE and REGION blocks alongside the actual cues, which makes it noisier to read as plain text than a raw transcript. It was standardized by the W3C specifically so browsers wouldn't need a plugin to show captions, which is why YouTube, most e-learning platforms and nearly every modern video player export captions as .vtt by default.

How to convert VTT to TXT

  1. 1Upload your .vtt file by dragging it in or clicking "Choose file".
  2. 2Choose which parts to remove: cue numbers, timestamps, HTML tags, or merge lines.
  3. 3The file is processed instantly in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
  4. 4Preview the result, then copy it or download the .txt file.

Why use our VTT to TXT converter?

  • Get a readable transcript from a browser-based video or e-learning platform.
  • Strip WebVTT's header and metadata noise before further text processing.
  • Prepare captions for translation or localization workflows.
  • Reuse video captions as an article, summary, or study material.
  • Check dialogue for accuracy without scrolling through timestamps.

Privacy

Your VTT file is parsed and converted locally in your browser using JavaScript — it is never uploaded to a server to perform this conversion. Nothing you convert here is stored, logged, or seen by anyone else.

FAQ

Does this remove the WEBVTT header and NOTE blocks?
Yes, the WEBVTT header line and any NOTE, STYLE or REGION blocks are automatically excluded from the plain text output.
What happens to cue identifiers?
Optional cue identifiers (like "caption-1") are detected and removed automatically, along with subtitle numbers if that option is enabled.
Will HTML tags inside captions be removed?
Yes, by default. You can disable tag removal if you need to keep the original markup.
Is this tool free and private?
Yes. It's completely free, requires no account, and your VTT file is processed locally in your browser rather than uploaded anywhere.
Can I convert captions exported from YouTube?
Yes. YouTube's downloadable captions are standard WebVTT files, so they work with this tool exactly like any other .vtt file.
